.......... but God causes the growth.

 I just wanted to repost this post that I wrote in 2015 when we lived in Wales, as a blogger friend wanted to see pictures of plants I had grown from pips and I couldn't manage to get them up :-}

Years ago I planted four separate
things in pots of soil.
Two were acorns.  They eventually
grew into two small oak trees,
which I brought with us when we
moved here over five years ago,
and have in tubs in my back garden.

I have always loved growing things,
and get quite excited when I see the
first signs of the plants emerging
from the soil.

Another thing I  planted was a fig, that too in a pot of soil, and which gradually grew into a small fig tree.   I  also brought this small tree with us to this house.  I put it into the ground and it has now grown to about three feet high.

The amazing thing is that it has actually produced three figs this year for the first time.
My husband loves figs so I am hoping that these will eventually ripen enough for him to be able to eat them.

The fourth thing that I planted was a grape seed.  This plant had always been in a pot outside all through the year, until we came to live here.  Then I put it into the front porch which is like a greenhouse when the sun is out.

About a month ago I put it back outside and I have to say that it appears to be thriving better there than it did indoors.
Perhaps one day I will get a greenhouse and see how it does in there.
There is something in all of this which really speaks spiritually to me about having humility in the Lord.

Although I have thoroughly enjoyed watching these plants grow,  there is no way that I could take any credit regarding the actual growth of the plants.  I know how to place the original seed in the ground, and I can encourage it to grow by watering it, but that is all that I can do.  All credit regarding the growth goes to God.
The same applies to my calling in the church, which I believe is evangelism and, strangely enough, I have to say that just like my grapevine  thrives when outdoors I too love being outside sharing the gospel.  However, I may plant, I may water, but it is God who causes the growth, and all credit and glory can only go to Him.

This is emphasized in 1 Corinthians ch. 3 v. 6 and 7  where the apostle Paul says 'I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused it to grow.  So neither the one who plants counts for anything, nor the one who waters, but God who causes the growth. '

'Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.'

Ephesians ch. 3 v. 20

Brenda, thank you so much. No I can see them! It is amazing. Also the comparison and the bible verse. It is such an encouragement. Thank you.

Hi Aritha, the fig tree and the grape vine had to be left in a previous house as they were too big to dig up. I have another fig tree in my garden in this house which, strangely enough, I was given by a neighbour in another house in Wales. It is about six feet tall and has figs on it. I hope you are recovering well, God bless you.

Amen amen to this, Brenda. It really spoke to me.

I've been praying for someone and only God makes that seed grow. So true. A good reminder.

Hi Sandi,
I join with you in prayer for whatever you are asking for the person who you are praying for. We don't need to know who it is, the Lord knows. All we need to do is agree with whatever the person prays, and that it comes to pass. God knows and sees all, and what ever we ask in Jesus' name shall come to pass.

Hi Brenda,
Beautiful post full of spiritual truth. Some plant, some water, but only God can give the increase. May we have humility to let Him work through us, and we and all whose lives He touches will be blessed.
God bless you,
Laurie

Hi Laurie,
I always think of God as the Master chess player. He knows how to move the chess pieces around, but the chess pieces can do nothing of themselves to win the game. God bless you Laurie, and may the Lord keep you safe in these trying times.

Good post and Bible verse.

We cannot get the figs to ripen; maybe it's the weather. We tried to put the vine in the greenhouse. It likes it better outdoors. Got a couple of bunches of grapes. Did not ripen either.

God bless.

Hi Victor, I think the plants have a mind of their own. God bless.

I was saying to my daughter just tonight that we must plant the seed, step away and allow someone to water the seed (unless God directs us to do both)..But then it is God alone who gives the growth.
I tend to obsess over something I begin too much..even losing sleep over it. This is not what we are supposed to do. Maybe that's why I am too impatient to grow plants! Luckily we live in a forested area so we get plenty of wild ones here.. some are quite beautiful like the wild violets.
Hope you are well~Lisa~

Hi Lisa,
as I was reading your comment all bits of scripture was coming into my mind:- 'Take no thought for tomorrow....' 'Be anxious for nothing...'. I know how you feel as I tend to do similar things sometimes, but what the Lord specifically brings to my mind when I am worrying about health issues or other things that I am going through on a particular day is 'Take every thought captive and bring it into the Word of God'. Then He brings to my mind what He has spoken to me from His Word. Regarding the plants, you live in a beautiful place and I love all nature. We live near the sea but also back onto fields and get some pretty wild flowers come over into the garden. I am keeping ok in the Lord, and hope you are keeping well too. God bless.

Thank you for visiting my blog! We are Mennonites living in Virginia. I read your after death experience, and how wonderful! My sister-in-law had one also. I have reently bought quite a few houseplants and really enjoy watching them grow.

Brenda said...

Hi Ginny,
I had never heard of Mennonites and looked it up. It seems you more or less believe similar to me. I trust in the scriptures, and do not believe in infant baptism. You have to believe before you are baptized, and I got baptized in the Adelaide Revival Centre many years ago, after I believed in Jesus as the only way to eternal life. How wonderful that your sister had a death experience too, it is something that can not be imagined unless you experience it. God bless.

Hi Brenda,
I like your chess analogy! And yet, unlike chess pieces, we do have free will, which God gave us so that we could freely choose to love or to reject Him. Even once we are saved, unless we yield to His Spirit, He may not use us to fulfill His perfect plan for us.
May God bless you and your lovely ministry,
Laurie

Brenda said...

Hi Laurie,
yes, the 'chess pieces' are the 'us' in the Spirit. We choose whether to use the mind of Christ, which we have access to through the Holy Spirit once we are born again, or the carnal mind. That is why it is so important to take every thought captive and bring it into obedience to the Word spoken to us. We are told that many shall fall away from the faith in the end times, and I believe we are in those times. God bless.

Laurie Collett said...

Hi Brenda,
Amen -- may we bring every thought captive to His Word. I agree that we are in the End Times, and as I heard a prophecy scholar say recently, in the last hours of the last days. May we be faithful and obedient to His will until He returns. God bless you too,
Laurie

Hi Brenda, I am so looking forward to spring and getting out into the garden again! Love your thoughts about what Paul said about planting and watering, but if we think about it even the seeds and water are from God! He is wonderful!!! ❤️

Brenda said...

Hi Susan,
absolutely, God's creation is truly wonderful. His Words speak both physical and Spiritual, and so does His creation. What people call a weed, to many indigenous people in Australia is a medicine. In nature the dandelion is a medicine cabinet in itself and butterflies eat stingy nettles. Scripture says that the leaves are for the healing, and it is so true. God bless.

Susan said...

Brenda, I love dandelion tea ❤️and put dandelion greens and flowers in my salads in spring and summer. I think knowing what weeds and native plants are edible and knowing how to trap rabbits might come in handy if the economy completely collapses.
